Job Description

As a Senior Project Engineer at BAE Systems SMS, you have significant responsibility and opportunity to contribute directly to the success of our programs. You will be accountable for managing and delivering a defined scope of work meeting all requirements within cost and schedule commitments. You will lead your team through all program phases, guiding technical discussions, technical collaboration, and making risk-based decisions.

The Engineering, Science and Analysis (ESA) Strategic Capabilities Unit comprises the technical talent and organizational leadership that enables the successful delivery of high-impact discriminating technologies for our customers’ missions. What You’ll Do:

  • Negotiate, establish, baseline, monitor, and control scope throughout planning and execution, thoroughly understanding the details and technical breadth of your team’s deliverables.
  • Plan creation and monitoring to accomplish your team’s work scope:
    • Lead creation of a credible cost and schedule initial estimate and program baseline plan
    • Capture plan uncertainties in Risk/Opportunity tool
    • Throughout execution, perform detailed monitoring, reporting, and forecasting of performance against the baseline using formal Earned Value planning, analysis, and reporting tools as well as BAE SMS internal cost and schedule tools. Based on these indicators - proactively address deviations, direct course corrections to keep team activities on plan, and engage other resources when required.
  • Be a scope, baseline, Risk and Opportunity owner. As accountable owner of your team’s scope, cost, and schedule baseline, perform continuous monitoring and documentation of Risks and Opportunities against the baseline programmatic plan.
    • Monitor, manage, and defend your team’s scope of work, protecting against all non-adjudicated scope changes.
    • Continuously communicate uncertainties of your team’s ability to meet its requirements within the cost, schedule, and technical baseline.
    • Through program team collaboration, proactively develop mitigations for Risks and approaches to enable realization of Opportunities.
  • Accomplish your team’s scope using the combined capabilities of BAE SMS.
    • Understand company and program resources and processes. Forecast resource needs and actively work with functional and company organizations to obtain all necessary resources.
  • Subcontracts and supplier management:
    • Lead your team in purchasing necessary elements from external suppliers, overseeing management of these critical activities to ensure that all technical requirements are met within cost and schedule agreements.
    • Facilitate constructive collaboration with suppliers.
  • Be a communication leader. Continuously working to make sure that all stakeholders have the information they need, when needed.
    • Within your team, the program team, business area, suppliers, and customers you will continuously identify, and repair communication gaps and disconnects.
    • Throughout execution, negotiate and establish Roles and Responsibilities, ensuring they are understood, and teams are aligned.
    • Work with your peers and managers in program leadership and Functional organizations to evaluate and improve program tools, business rhythm, and reporting practices.
  • Team leadership and management. Working with functional organizations and the program team, you will assemble and manage your team -
    • Directing team activities to meet commitments within Cost and Schedule baseline and program risk posture by monitoring ongoing performance, making course corrections, and providing technical direction.
    • Establishing and maintaining a fun, sustainable, and fulfilling team environment, supporting team member in achieving their career and professional goals.
    • You will leverage your Project Engineering expertise to teach and mentor other Project Engineers at all levels. You will be a trusted partner with program leadership to provide feedback and optimize business practices.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.

On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site three or more days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between company campuses and other possible non-company locations may be required.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or cleanroom, outdoors or remote research environment.
  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.
  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills

  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 10 or more years related experience.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • Experience on at least one program as lead with scope, cost, and schedule responsibility with budgets over $20M and/or staff size of 20 or more.
    • Demonstrated ability to establish, estimate, baseline, and manage your team’s work scope, technical deliverables, cost, and schedule performance through all program phases.
    • Familiarity and demonstrated expertise with full range of programmatic planning and reporting tools
    • Familiarity and experience with all elements of Earned Value Management System: cost/schedule integrated plan creation, management, analysis, and reporting.
  • Demonstrated expertise in generation and tracking of schedules using MS Project or similar tool. Understands schedule logic for own area of responsibility and how it relates to other areas. Understands and leads earned-value schedule performance measurement, analysis, reporting, and course corrections.
  • Has thorough understanding of how related technical disciplines affect the design and implementation of their items. Manages technical interchange with all related disciplines.
  • Expertise with Risk and Opportunity management and Change Control Process via R&O boards, Engineer Review Boards, Change Control Boards and related Review Boards.
  • Subcontract management. Demonstrated experience in management of aerospace industry suppliers.
    • Identifying suppliers, make/buy decisions, proposal evaluation, and authoring of effective contractual documents including SOWs and specs. Managing subcontractor performance throughout their full period of performance while proactively addressing technical and programmatic issues.
  • Effective written and verbal communication. As communication is a foundational Project Engineering skillset, you must have demonstrated expertise authoring, leading, and briefing business and technical communications.
    • Ability to filter and target information appropriately to each audience.
    • Effective in messaging, especially to management and customers.
    • Ability to influence without authority.
    • Presentations to small and large audiences, company internal, and external.
    • Collaboration leader.
    • Establishment of workshare, roles, and responsibilities.
  • Tool and process improvement mindset. As a leader within the company and member of this functional organization, you will help continuously improve tools and processes, working constructively to make us better and more efficient.

A security clearance or access with Polygraph is not required to be eligible for this position. However, the applicant must be willing and eligible for submission, depending on program requirements, after an offer is accepted and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance/access.

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills

  • Control Account Management (CAM) certification strongly preferred.
  • Electronic project execution leadership experience and/or Electrical background.
  • Experience specifying and ordering Electrical/Electronic Engineering (EEE) parts.
  • Knowledge of the lifecycle of development for electrical engineering projects from start to finish.
  • Experience with Aeronautical/ Aerospace Payload and/or Space Vehicle technology through program work for NASA, NOAA, DoD, and classified customers.



Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $146670 - $249330

Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
