Job Description BAE Systems is seeking a Safety Health & Environmental Specialist to support the San Diego Ship Repair site. In this role as a Safety Health & Environmental (SHE) Specialist, you will report to the Site Safety Health & Environmental Manager. You'll support both safety and environmental with a focus on industrial hygiene and environmental compliance. This critical role will require working with various stakeholders internally and externally to ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
Included duties as the SHE Specialist:
Industrial Hygiene 50%:
- Manage the site Occupational Health and Industrial Hygiene Programs, including identification, evaluation, control and monitoring of workplace hazards.
- Conduct air and noise monitoring.
- Maintain sampling equipment for certification and calibration.
- Keep leadership informed of activities in support of the IH/OH programs and changes in conditions, which could impact established hazard controls and production in general (e.g. quality, schedule, and budget).
- Coordinate project tasks with safety and health staff and contractors, addressing proposed activities, resources, and preparation for safe operations.
- Conduct ISO 45001 audits, briefings/meetings, as required.
- Communicate effectively with stakeholders, management, regulators, and other external or third parties.
- Serve as the technical representative of the IH program, managing activities, priorities, and risks.
- Foster opportunities to improve IH project performance, program execution, management and employee expectations, sample data quality, and overall value for the company and its employees.
- Identify hazardous workplace conditions, including inspection of machinery and equipment to ensure safety and health compliance.
- Investigate, prepare, and forward reports on safety health and environmental related incidents and near misses and other incidents as required.
- Collect samples and measurements of hazardous forces and toxic substances.
- Remove hazards and/or protect employees by guarding, revising work procedures, and training or requiring use of protective clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Participate in Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) or other regulatory inspections and in any procedures that may follow a notice of violation.
Environmental Compliance 50%:
- Monitor, train, and report on compliance issues pertaining to federal, state, local and corporate and environmental regulations.
- Assist with maintaining environmental metrics.
- Develop an enhanced VOC reporting and recordkeeping system in an effort to automate manual tasks and increase reporting accuracy.
- Audit the site’s Environmental Management System to help maintain ISO 14001 Certification.
- Communicate with the various departments to ensure VOC usage logs are maintained accurately, optimize VOC emissions reporting.
- Coordinate and engage with SHE, Operations, Facilities, Engineering, and other personnel in the identification, development, and implementation of environmental goals which will positively impact and add value to the organization.
Required Education, Experience, & Skills
- Typically requires a Bachelors Degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Natural Sciences, or a related discipline and two years of safety, health and environmental work experience, or the overall equivalent.
- Experience working within a shipyard or manufacturing environment.
- Highly effective communication skills, written and verbal.
- Ability to coach, mentor, and guide others, particularly on a team, in related SHE best practices.
- Possess basic knowledge of Environmental and Safety Management System (ISO14001 & ISO45001).
- Computer skills to work proficiently in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and related industry software applications.
Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
- ISO 14001 Lead Auditor Certification.
- Master’s Degree in related field.
- Certification as an ASP, CSP, CIH.
- Experience in Safety, Health, and Environmental programs supporting heavy manufacturing.
Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $77809 - $132275
Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
